Dear Chancellor Rachel Reeves,

We the undersigned are writing to call on the government to commit to delivering 90, 000 social rent homes every year until 2029 at the Spending Review this June.

We are in a housing emergency due to a severe shortage of genuinely affordable, permanent social rent homes.

A shocking 164,040 children are homeless and living with their families in temporary accommodation. They face constant disruption - being moved with just 48 hours’ notice, often away from their home area, schools and parents’ workplaces. It is also, in many cases, far from temporary. Forty-five per cent of families are stuck in this type of accommodation for over two years. And, for some, it’s even for over a decade.

Every child needs a safe and secure home. We are urging the government to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness.

The key to ending this housing emergency lies in building more social homes that families can afford. These homes would provide the foundation for children to thrive, paving the way to a brighter future.

At the Spending Review on 11 June, the government must decide how much to invest in social housing over the next five years. This is the government’s chance to create the long-lasting legacy of change that was promised at the last election.

We are asking you, the chancellor, to end the housing emergency and invest the money needed to build the social rent homes that England is crying out for.
