THIS ACTION IS NOW CLOSED. THE CHANCELLOR ANNOUNCED IN HIS AUTUMN STATEMENT THAT HE WILL BE UNFREEZING HOUSING BENEFIT IN THE NEW YEAR. A CAMPAIGN WIN!
We recently handed in Vicky’s letter to the chancellor calling on him to meet with her and to unfreeze housing benefit. We’re still waiting for a response.
With winter fast approaching, there are now 131,000 children like Vicky’s who are homeless with their families, and growing up in temporary accommodation. Insecure, often unhealthily cramped and in poor conditions. No one should have to live like this.
We still believe we can get the government to see sense.
The countdown to the Autumn Statement on November 22 is on. The Chancellor will be laying out the government's spending plans for the year ahead. And he has a crucial choice to make. Whether to take urgent action to stop record homelessness, or ignore the situation.
Your MP can put pressure on the chancellor to make the right choice. Ask them today to tell Jeremy Hunt to stop record homelessness by:
- unfreezing housing benefit so it covers at least the cheapest third of rents
The more MPs we can get to support Vicky’s campaign, the more pressure we can put on the Treasury.
With a general election looming next year, this could be the last chance the government have to stop record levels of homelessness on their watch.
Time is running out for the government to stop rising homelessness before the winter kicks in. Email your MP today.
