We need to stand together through the crisis

Our advisers are hearing from more and more people worried about becoming homeless. During lockdown, those with nowhere to stay can’t rely on family and friends.
To avoid needless evictions and rising homelessness as a result of the pandemic – and to keep homeless people safe – we need the government to:
- Publish clear guidance to ensure councils provide safe emergency accommodation to everyone at risk of the streets
- Protect renters and provide financial support to help renters pay off arrears built up due to COVID-19
- Scrap the benefit cap and review housing benefit rates to ensure people can pay the rent, and to prevent growing rent arrears and eviction
Gaps in the safety net are widening. There is not enough support for renters to help them pay off their rent arrears. Street homeless people are being denied emergency accommodation despite their increased risk of infection, because they aren’t eligible or considered vulnerable enough.
Hundreds of thousands have lost their jobs, and a rapidly growing number of people are at risk of losing their homes over the coming months. Support our call for action to help those facing urgent housing issues at this difficult time.
