Bristol’s unfair private renting system is driving poverty and homelessness and breaking up our communities.
Bristol renters can’t keep up with this city’s expensive and rising rents. A lot of us are living in poor and unsafe conditions, and we aren’t able to challenge landlords or letting agents who fail to make repairs, because we are at risk of rent increases and eviction. And many of us are locked out of private renting altogether, due to the discrimination we face based on our age, sex, race, disability, type of employment or type of income. But it does not need to be like this.
To make our local renting system fair, affordable, accessible and safe, we demand that our city’s political leaders:
- Tackle high and out of control rents by lobbying the national government for local powers to control rents.
- Tackle poor conditions and lack of protections for private renters by taking more formal enforcement action locally, and lobbying the government to deliver a robust Renters’ Rights Bill.
- Tackle discrimination in private renting by co-producing a strategy and action plan with the community to challenge and stamp out these practices.
We’ve made so much progress since the campaign first launched in 2021, including securing a consensus across Bristol’s main political parties on the need for a fair renting system and the introduction of rent controls.
But with a new national government focussed on housing and rental reform and a new local council in Bristol, now is the time for us to push for the changes Bristol renters need.
