Call on the housing minister to pass the Renters’ Rights Bill now.
Every 21 minutes, a household is threatened with homelessness due to a section 21’ no fault’ eviction. This means that, every 21 minutes, a household contacts their local authority for homelessness support because they’ve received a 'no fault' eviction. Our eviction ticker is tracking every single time this happens from now until the bill is passed and implemented.
households threatened with homelessness due to a section 21 since
It has now been a whole year since the government came into power, and renters are still waiting on the change that we were promised. In an interview with the BBC last year, the Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook committed to end section 21 ‘no fault’ evictions by ‘early summer’*. And as we're now in Parliament’s summer break, it’s looking less and less likely that the government is going to make good on its manifesto promise ‘to abolish section 21 immediately’.
As we wait for this bill to become law and be implemented, renters continue to lose out. We continue to face section 21 evictions, which are a leading trigger of homelessness, as well as having to put up with out-of-control rent rises and landlords who rent out dangerous and unsafe homes.
The message to the housing minister is loud and clear: no more delays to renters’ rights. Renters need these changes now.
Our eviction ticker shows how many more renters have been served a section 21 eviction notice and are at risk of homelessness because the Renters’ Rights Bill has not yet been turned into law and implemented. Email the housing minister to demand that he truly stands up for renters by making this bill law without any further delays when he gets back from summer holidays.
