Email your MP: support key amendments and change renting for good

Start the year as you mean to go on – fighting for renters’ rights.

You can help persuade MPs to support vital changes to the Renters’ Rights Bill.  

Instead of providing safe and stable homes for the 11 million private renters across England, right now the private rented sector just isn’t fit for purpose.

Renters are being denied the foundation of a secure home because the system is stacked against them. They are having to constantly put up with:

• unchecked rent increases
• a lack of protection from being evicted
• unlawful discrimination that stops some people from even viewing properties

We need to make sure that we fight for the Renters’ Rights Bill to be as strong as possible. Only then will renters finally have the security and stability they need to put down roots in their communities.

We know the system can change. And you have the power to call on your MP to back some key amendments (changes) to the bill. We need as many MPs as possible to add their names in support of these amendments before the next debate. By emailing them, you can explain what they need to know and show them that this is important to their constituents.  

So, email your MP now and get them to support the key changes to the bill that we’ve all been fighting for. The new year could be the start of new wins for renters. 

• What are the key amendments?
  • Rent in advance – tabled by Alex Sobel MP. This amendment would stop landlords asking for more than one month's rent in advance at the start of a contract.
  
  
  • Guarantors – tabled by Alex Sobel MP. This amendment would mean that landlords can only ask for a tenant to provide a guarantor in certain circumstances. Both guarantor and rent in advance requests make finding a home even harder for renters and discriminate against people on low incomes.
  
  
  • Rent stabilisation – tabled by Paula Barker MP. This amendment would tackle unfair and unexpected rent increases during tenancies. It would cap them in line with inflation or wage growth - whichever was lowest in the last year, and only one increase would be allowed per year. This would mean that increases are more realistic and could prevent many people from being forced out of their homes by unreasonable rent hikes.
  
  
  • A 'detailed' landlord register – tabled by Paula Barker MP. This amendment would make sure that key information about landlords - for example, their history of serving evictions - is included on the proposed landlord register.
