Hundreds of thousands of people are being unfairly locked out of homes they could otherwise afford – simply because they receive housing benefit.
No one should be denied a safe home because of discrimination. Yet the increasing number of people who receive benefits are often confronted with ‘No DSS’, ‘No Universal Credit’ or ‘No Benefits’ adverts whilst looking for a home.
This is discrimination, and it’s unlawful, as we've seen with Shelter winning two landmark legal cases in July and September.
With the evictions ban lifting at the end of September, benefit discrimination could result in a tidal wave of people of people being denied safe homes.
Shelter are working hard to tackle this unlawful discrimination. But we need your help. We fought and won the case to make housing benefit discrimination unlawful but the practice is still widespread. Now we need to make sure landlords and letting agents are holding up their end of the bargain.
