It's decision time - we need more social homes.

Email your MP today and ask them to make the case for investment in social homes.

Countdown to the Spending Review

A huge opportunity to end the housing emergency is almost upon us. At the Spending Review on 11 June, the government must decide on how much to invest in building social rent homes for the next five to 10 years. They promised real change at the election. Building a new generation of social homes will transform our society. The government must decide, will they invest to end the housing emergency, or will they watch it get worse?

Decades of underinvestment means that our country now has a severe shortage of genuinely affordable social rent homes. This is fuelling homelessness.

More than 165,000 children are currently homeless and living with their families in temporary accommodation. This is costing us huge amounts of money, with the annual temporary accommodation bill coming in at £2.3 billion in the 2023/2024 financial year. Shelter’s analysis shows that this could rise to £3.9 billion by 2029. That’s £10.7 million being spent every single day, which could be used to build social homes.

The government must provide transformational investment to build a new generation of social homes at the Spending Review. This investment will mean everyone has access to a safe and secure home they can afford. It’s the only way to end child homelessness.

By emailing your MP today, you are increasing pressure on the government to do the right thing in this crucial time before the Spending Review.
