Let's be clear: Nigel Farage's plan to remove people who are legally settled in this country from their homes is racist and morally wrong. 

These divisive plans risk kicking thousands of our friends, neighbours and colleagues out of their homes and the communities they are part of, without justification. 

He wants to distract us from the real causes of the housing emergency: decades of underinvestment and selling off social homes. 

Right now, the severe shortage of social homes is having devastating consequences. There are over 176,000 children homeless and living in temporary accommodation – an all-time record. We need more social homes that everyone can afford. 

There is a real solution, and it has nothing to do with who your neighbours are. We need to build 90,000 social rent homes a year for ten years. We have done it before. We can do it again. What it takes is political will.

• What we're calling for

  The housing emergency was caused by decades of political decisions to underfund, sell off and demolish social homes. Millions of people are living with the consequences: sleeping rough, stuck in temporary accommodation, or in homes that are unaffordable or dangerous. Kicking thousands of people out of their homes and communities would make that worse, not better.

  We will not let that truth get buried under division and scapegoating.

  The government must:

  • Build 90,000 social rent home each year for the next decade
  • Get councils building social homes again
  • Ensure everyone has access to the safe, secure and affordable home they need

   

  A secure home is the foundation that all of us need to thrive. It is time politicians focused on building them.
