Petition: the Renters’ Rights Bill must finally fix renting

Angela Rayner − Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government − we need you to make sure that the government doesn’t miss this once-in-a-generation opportunity to fix renting. 

The Renters' Rights Bill is about to be turned into law. To make sure that this bill improves the lives of the 11 million private renters across England, the government must include three more vital changes. These are: 

• rent stabilisation
• limiting requests for guarantors
• a detailed landlord register

These new measures will help renters put down roots in their communities and provide the stability that everyone needs to build a healthy and fulfilled life. Without them, the bill cannot truly deliver the improvements that renters desperately need. 

Angela Rayner must make sure that renters’ rights are at the heart of this bill. Only then will our broken renting system be fixed for future generations.

• Read more about the three vital changes we need:
  1. Rent stabilisation By limiting rent increases in line with inflation or wage growth, renters will be protected from the unfair rent increases that are currently forcing them out of their homes. Because, for many, a rent hike is as good as an eviction. 
  2. Limiting requests for guarantors Unfair requests for guarantors - who are often required to earn a very high salary, own their own home, and live in the UK - create unnecessary barriers to finding a home for many renters. This change would mean that landlords can only ask for a tenant to provide a guarantor in certain circumstances. 
  3. A detailed landlord register A fully functioning national landlord register would mean renters are empowered and equipped with all the information they need to be able to take action against rogue landlords and enforce their rights.
