TO MY COUNCILLOR: MAKE FAIR HOUSING YOUR PRIORITY
Dear newly elected Birmingham councillors,
Congratulations on your election to serve the people of Birmingham! We the undersigned are writing to you to ask you to make fair housing a priority.
People in Birmingham are struggling with living in bad housing. Shelter Birmingham did some research last year and found that of the Brummies taking part, 50% of private renters and 49% of renters in social housing said they were living in poor conditions and disrepair.
In the same research, 34% of private renters, 33% of homelessness people and 26% of homeowners taking part said they were struggling to pay their rent and bills – and this was before the cost of living crisis.
With 1 in 94 Brummies now living in temporary accommodation and with an ever-increasing housing waiting list, we need our councillors to prioritise fair housing.
Birmingham Fair Housing Campaign has carved out ‘The People’s Manifesto for Fair Housing’ which has been endorsed widely by Trade Unions as well as faith and civic society organisations and over 2,300 Brummies. We are asking you to pledge to support the manifesto and work with The Birmingham Fair Housing Campaign to make their vision for fair housing a reality for all Brummies.
